Nicos Makris (Professor, Univ. of Patras)

He has more than 20 years of research, academic and professional experience in the areas of structural-earthquake engineering and applied mechanics-dynamics. His publication record includes more than 80 papers in archival journals, 73 papers in conference proceedings and 25 technical research reports and monographs. More specifically, his research interests include the seismic protection of structures with modern technologies, the analysis and design of rocking structures with emphasis on soil-structure interaction, bridges, and the reconstruction-preservation of ancient monuments. For 6 years he has served as the Director of Reconstruction of the Temple of Zeus in Ancient Nemea. As a former student of Prof. Gazetas, Prof. Makris has established a long cooperation with the PI, which has resulted in over 10 journal papers. He has been co-investigator with him in two projects (Ohba Ohashi bridge project, funded by the Japanese industry and recently in Pythagoras Research Project). He is planned to adjoin the team in the phase of conception and validation of the numerical models to account for P-δ effects, foundation uplifting and mobilisation of soil bearing capacity. His main activity during this research will cover the first 3 years of the project, while during the fourth and fifth years he will be supporting the team in the task of development of seismic upgrade strategies to be applied to existing structures [WP2, WP6 and WP8].
